Abkhazia

Abkhazia is a region in northwestern Georgia that declared independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, leading to a violent conflict between Georgian forces and Abkhaz separatists. Despite a ceasefire in 1994, tensions remained high.

In 2008, following the Russia-Georgia war, Russia officially recognized Abkhazia’s independence, though most of the world, including Georgia, continues to view it as part of Georgian territory. Today, Abkhazia operates as a de facto independent region with significant Russian military and political influence, though it remains internationally unrecognized by the majority of countries.

It is difficult to visit the region without visiting Russia, and you have to obtain the Russian visa for it.
