History of the garden
The foundation of the botanical garden in Batumi is the merit of the Kharkov University professor Andrey Krasnov. He defined the main task of the garden – acclimatization and breeding of subtropical plants. In 1998 the garden became a member of BGCI – international union of plant protection of the world botanical garden.
The complex maintains scientific ties with universities and gardens of 140 countries and actively participates in international conferences and world scientific activities, as well as publishes scientific and informative literature and the newspaper “Botanical Garden”. On the territory of the garden there is a scientific library, herbarium fund. The employees consider their mission to be the protection and preservation of plants for future generations.

Plant collection
The catalog of plants of the Botanical Garden in Batumi has 1800 taxonomic units of woody plants, of which 90 are of Caucasian origin and 1540 taxa are representatives of various foreign flora. Curators divide the whole collection into 9 phytogeographical departments: Himalayan, Australian, Mexican, Mediterranean, East Asia, New Zealand, North and South America and humid subtropics of Transcaucasia.
Visitors can familiarize themselves with the collections of citrus, fruit and berry and flower and herbaceous plants. The collections of camellias and roses are very popular. The Botanical Garden of Batumi is especially surprising in winter: the climate of the region is subtropical and plants feel comfortable.

Parks of Batumi Garden
The administration divides the territory into three zones: upper and lower parks, as well as the Seaside Park named after Giorgi Gabrichidze. You can enter the garden from three directions, and there are ticket offices in all parks.
Upper Park
The area of the Upper Park is 11 hectares. There are about 200 species of woody plants and almost 225 species of garden forms. The Upper Park is famous for its age-old plants – visitors can see the Canary date palm, twig-shaped eucalyptus, evergreen sequoia, Crimean pine, swamp cypress, firs, maples and others. In summer the park is decorated with blooming hydrangea, abelia and other flowering plants.
The Upper Park is the main attraction of the Botanical Garden. The garden named the squares after Yason Gordeziani and His Holiness and Beatitude, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, Metropolitan Ilya I of Pitsunda and Tskhum-Abkhazeti, as well as a cross carved in stone by sculptor O. Darchia. Most exhibitions start from this park.
Lower Park
The territory of the Lower Park occupies an area of 10 hectares. It starts from the main entrance. According to the inventory, the collection of the park has up to 95 species of woody plants. Here you can see oaks, hornbeams, magnolias, dracaena, strawberry tree and other specimens.
A special pride of the Lower Park is the collection of Japanese camellias, which during the blooming period are a delightful sight. This is the most crowded part of Batumi Garden, panoramic platforms are located on high points.
Giorgi Gabrichidze Park
Initially this area was called “American Boulevard”. Plants brought from North America were planted here. However, during the Second World War “American Boulevard” was destroyed. It was revived in 1950 by the agronomist-decorator Giorgi Gabrichidze. The new park was designed in the French-regular style. Visitors can walk along the landscaped paths and admire beautiful flowerbeds and woody plants. Palm trees, feijoa trees, rare magnolias and many other ornamental plants grow in the Seaside Park.
Giorgi Gabrichidze Park has access to the beach, where camping and picnic sites, cafes, bars, greenhouses and greenhouses are located. The park regularly hosts exhibitions, photo shoots and wedding ceremonies.
